January was a good reading month, not a stellar mental health month. I always struggle in January, don’t know why though. I’m used to it but this month was particularly challenging. So, I’m glad it’s over and hopefully February March will be better for all of us.
Possessed, Plundered & Pillaged by Tana Stone – 4 stars, 5 stars and 3.5 stars. I had fun reading this series, if you enjoy fated mates and Viking Alien warriors, you would probably enjoy this series. I’ll definitely read the next book. Check my reviews hereand here.
You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria – 4 stars. I loved the telenovela setting in this one! Even though I wasn’t a fan of the final conflict, it was a very entertaining read with amazing family dynamics, Latinx representation, drama, funny scenes, great banter and powerful chemistry.
The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian – 2 stars. The story was interesting but the suspense ended way too soon. Too much telling instead of showing and there was a lot of repetition. I was still intrigued by where the author was taking the story. Unfortunately, the ending felt flat and made little sense. Overall, just an okay read.
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout – 2 stars. Oh, this book. I don’t even know where to start. I was expecting to love this one. I like Jennifer L. Armentrout’s writing and I usually enjoy her stories. This book didn’t quite work for me. First of all, it has been marketed as high fantasy and in my opinion it really isn’t. Then, the world building is somewhat inconsistent and the first interaction between Poppy and Hawke wasn’t the best (consent should be taken very seriously) which ruined most of the romance to me. Poppy’s actions were very out of character because she didn’t act like a sheltered character at all. Also, several of her choices… Dumb. However, I’m curious about where the story is going. The political intrigue and the conflict between atlantians, humans, royals and wolvens was engaging and I wish it was better explored. I’ll probably read the next one. Yeah, it makes no sense that I want to do that. Can’t explain it!
White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo – I didn’t rate this book. It generated a lot of backlash, we should be giving more attention to nonfiction books written by AOC about racial inequality. I’m not upset I’ve read it but I’m moving on from it to read books on this topic written by Ibram X. Kendi, Reni Eddo-Lodge and other authors.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling – 4 stars. This was so fun to listen, I felt like I was listening to one of my friends talk about her life while we chilled out in a coffee shop with an extra large coffee. Mindy has a lot of awkward and interesting stories and she’s really, really funny. It’s not a deep book, but I really enjoyed listening to it.
One of Us Is Next by Karen M. McManus – 3.5 stars. I had an interesting reading experience with this book. Most people loved the first book and were disappointed with One of Us Is Next. I was disappointed with the first book, so my expectations for the second book were low and I ended up enjoying it more. I actually thought it was less predictable. Very entertaining.
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager – 4 stars. I struggled to rate this one. It was one of the best mystery/horror/thriller books I’ve read for sure. The two timelines really worked for me and kept me invested in the story. The audiobook was really, really good and I recommend it. The ending… wasn’t exactly what I had hoped for, it still surprised me, but it felt a little far fetched.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black – 4 stars. I’m still surprised to have enjoyed this as much as I did. I was prepared to not like it very much, honestly, with all the hype surrounding this trilogy. I started reading it with low expectations. I was sucked in this world pretty fast. The cruelty of the Fae, the setting, Jude’s personality, the politics & intrigue, Cardan’s obsession about Jude really made the story for me. It dragged a bit but I enjoyed it a lot.
Enemies by Tijan – 3 stars. I have mixed feelings about Enemies. I was confused at the beginning of the story, Dusty and Stone had zero interactions, so I wasn’t really into it at first. When things started to happen, I enjoyed their romance and liked both of them together. However, the drama surrounding Dusty was just too much.
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan – 4 stars. I’m so happy I decided to read this series. Honestly, I’m obsessed with this world. The characters are amazing, funny and annoying. There are so many layers. Freaking loving it. There are a couple of chapters that were a little slow, but I still wanted to keep reading it. Can’t wait to read the next one.
Untouchable by Sam Mariano – 1 star. This book didn’t work for me at all. I was expecting a bully romance but I wasn’t expecting nothing like this. The lack of consent and unprotected sex (even though Zoey asks Carter to use condoms) through all of the story were very disturbing to me. Also, Carter had zero character growth. Not recommended, at all.
Rough Hard Fierce by Skye Warren – 2 stars. Another one that didn’t quite work for me. I have been in a mood for dark romance lately, but suddenly when I’m in the middle of one, I don’t feel like reading it at all. Can’t understand it, can’t explain it. Skye Warren’s books used to work for me but clearly not this trilogy. A big slice of the story felt disconnected, characters were acting out of character and some choices that didn’t make much sense. Disappointing.
Make Up Break Up by Lily Menon – 4 stars. I really enjoyed this story! A great rivals to lovers romance with amazing characters, I loved that Annika was an amazing, super focused, badass CEO. Check my review here.
Overall, I read 16 books, 6147 pages, which is a very good reading month for me. I rated 1 book 5 stars, 7 books 4 stars, 2 books 3.5 stars, 1 book 3 stars, 3 books 2 stars and 1 book 1 star. My ratings were all over the place, but 50% of what I read was rated 4 stars or higher so that’s pretty good.
I have been posting mini reviews on my goodreads but not as much here. I definitely need to write more reviews. I’m struggling with having enough time to do everything I need to. It didn’t help that I failed a college class and I’ll need to retake it. I have a lot going on and sometimes I just wonder how other people do all this and more. I don’t know, I’m just a little tired and depressed and I’m rambling. February has been a roller coaster too. So, maybe March will be better…?
