Book description:

Only fools fall in love…

After her senior year of high school leaves behind nothing but heartache, Olivia Beaumont is sure of this: She’s no stupid girl. She sets out for Winston University, promising herself that she will remain focused on her first and only love – astronomy. But all it takes is cocky sophomore Brax Jenkins and an accidental collision with a football, to throw her entire year off course.
A quick-tempered Southie who escaped the inner city streets of Boston to pitch for Winston, Brax is known to play way more fields than just the baseball diamond. So, when his name is drawn to take part in his fraternity’s hazing dare, Brax eagerly accepts the mission to take Olivia’s virginity. But he doesn’t plan on falling hard for the sweet and sassy Texas girl who sees right through his bad-boy persona.
As Olivia and Brax battle their feelings for each other, echoes of the past year begin to surface. A boy who once turned Olivia’s whole world upside down reappears, and “harmless” pranks wreak havoc. Pretty soon the aspiring astronomer is on the verge of revealing her most difficult, heartbreaking secret. All the while, Brax must wrestle with the irrevocable dare, and Olivia struggles against all logic as she does the one thing only a stupid girl would do: fall in love.

Review [possible spoilers]:

I’ve got a copy of Stupid Boy, book 2 of this series, through NetGalley and before I started reading I thought that I should check out Stupid Girl at least for some background, so I ordered it from Kobo. And that got me here in a large pool of mixed feelings.

I’m not saying I hated it because it’s not true but I have to say that there might have been some annoyance while I was reading it. Why am I reviewing the book? Because this is probably the hardest review I’ve done so far and I just can’t back away from it.

I actually loved how the book started,  a raw and strong scene and it set my expectations really high for the book. And then not so many pages ahead, the first time Olivia and Brax met, or bumped, ruined my expectations. Because I can’t quite understand how a girl who suffered what Olivia suffered, even though it’s been a year, could date this guy after the whole I kissed you because “It was natural hot-blooded male gut instinct”. What? It just sounds off. Apart from that and the annoying thing she keeps doing regarding Brax’s accent, I really liked Olivia, she stayed true to herself during the book, keeping her focus in her interests and even sharing the passion for astronomy with Brax. But Brax really ruined the book for me. I get that he came from a bad background, that he was marked by his past but I still can’t understand all the violence. He was always black and blue and way too ready to throw his fists at anyone that crossed his path. I totally understand the scenes he beats up Kelsey but Noah and Ash? Please. I also think that the reason why Brax had to stay away from Olivia, was a little unrealistic, maybe even forced.

I also loved Olivia’s grandpa and I really liked her roommate Tessa, especially her bluntness, it was definitely refreshing. So, going for book 2 and hoping it’s better than Stupid Girl.

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…
Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Book description:

What won’t he do for a second chance?

Former model Kelly Hurley has finally put the ashes of the past behind her. After a passionate but turbulent marriage to rock star Vaughan Hurley that ended in heartbreak and divorce, Kelly rebuilt her life in Portland, where she settled so their two young daughters could be close to their father. Just not so close Kelly couldn’t truly make her own way without interference from the man who shattered her heart. Now Kelly’s finally ready to move on, and she’s planning to marry another man.

But not if Vaughan has anything to say about it.

Vaughan knows he was a fool all those years ago. A young, selfish-and prideful-fool. Even as he buried himself in the fast, decadent rock-star lifestyle, he could never drown out the memory of Kelly’s beauty and love. Or the sweet, searing heat whenever they touched. For years, he’s had to deal with the pain of seeing her only because of their daughters, but it was never enough. Now Vaughan must prove that he’s the only man Kelly needs, before he loses her for good. And there’s only one way to do it….

Review [possible spoilers]:

I haven’t read the previous two books in this series but I was able to follow this story with no problems and fall in love with the Hurley family. I really loved this book. There’s something incredible appealing about second chances. I can honestly say it’s hard for me to review this book, because I can relate to part of it. My parents got divorced when I was 6, they never got back together because my mom moved on and that’s totally ok because they were kind of awful together. I can understand that sometimes great things happen to people at the wrong moments, sometimes we’re just not ready to appreciate it, to cherish it. That was my dad’s case and that’s probably why I understand all the background of this book and why I was moved by it.

Lauren Dane wrote a real touching story. I really loved Kelly, her relationship with her daughters and I liked that Vaughan was determined to do everything to get his family back. The only but here is that, from my point of view, Kelly fell into the relationship a little fast even though she made him work to prove that he changed. I will probably go back to read the first two books in this series and I would love to read a book about Kelly’s best friend, Stacey!

Wanted: one convenient wife

Venture capitalist Leo Reynolds is married to his work, but now he needs a wife. Someone to run his home, host his parties–and accept a marriage that’s strictly business. His one rule: love will play no part in their union. At least that’s the lie he tells himself, until he meets his match….

Enter Daniella White–handpicked by the matchmaker as the perfect wife. Marriage to Leo means security, and she’s willing to give up passion for friendship. But the moment they meet, sparks fly. And now temptation–and Leo’s own heart–have the billionaire ready to change all the rules.

Review [possible spoilers]:

Interesting plot and a cute story but I’ve read a few very similar to this one. It’s very hard to write an original story when there are several books out there about marriages of convenience. Still, a well written book, fast paced and easy to read.  It goes without saying that I couldn’t bring myself to like Leo which made Danniella the star of the book, a very persistent heroine with a funny personality. This was the first time I read a book by Kat Cantrell and I really liked the way she writes, so I’ll probably read a few of her books even though I won’t read more books in this series.

SHE WASN’T LOOKING FOR LOVE

Savannah Baron is determined to turn The Peach Pit from a simple roadside stand on her family’s Texas ranch into a bustling country store. She’s too busy with her business to even enter many rodeos anymore, let alone date. But when a health scare prompts her to search for her long-estranged mother, she discovers more than a helping hand in an old friend.

Soldier-turned-private investigator Travis Shepard never thought he’d move on after his wife’s tragic death, yet with Savannah, the walls he built around his heart begin to crumble away. But Savannah still faces a medical crisis and Travis can’t bear the idea of losing anyone else. Can he find the strength to love again?

Review [possible spoilers]:

Savannah and Travis are strong characters but I couldn’t connect with neither and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Still, it was an easy book to read. A few unexpected plot twists, a little romance, sparks flying and the author kept the story plausible. I really liked Savannah’s determination in  finding her mother, that definitely kept my interest. I also liked Savannah’s sister, I think that I might try to read the book about her. A classic romance.

Perfect is good. Imperfect is even better… City-slicker lawyer Jeannette Trenton is about as welcome at the Last Chance Ranch as a rattlesnake at a square dance. She’s there to atone for one major mistake. But Jeannette’s pretty sure righting her big wrong does not include thinking lustful thoughts about the ranch’s new cowhand…. Zach Powell knows Jeannette’s type-a wound-up-tight perfectionist with one eye on her email at all times. Heck, that used to be him. She needs to shake it loose, face her imperfections and allow herself to make mistakes. There’s definitely no mistake about the wickedly sexy vibe between them. This gal is gonna have to “cowboy up”…or miss the ride of her life!

Review [possible spoilers]:

This was a light read. Fast-paced, I actually found myself wishing that the book had more pages because the author didn’t have much time to build a relationship between the MCs. I also think that it’s easier to get into the book if you have read the previous two books in the series.
I liked Jeannette especially in the beginning of the book when she faces the mistakes she made but I liked Zach even more, the 180 in his life made sense and it takes a strong character to walk away from a comfortable lifestyle that turned him into someone he didn’t want to be.
Definitely, a book about second chances and an enjoyable read.
